SR-4 Aurora marks a major shift for GTSR as the first multi-occupant vehicle developed by our team. It will be the first ever 4-seater solar car developed by a North American team to race in the Formula Sun Grand Prix at it’s debut race in Summer 2025.
Aurora offers significant design improvements to our frame with the addition of an aluminum and carbon fiber sandwich composite chassis to the steel roll cage. The vehicle features a 14 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a 1.2 kW solar array as well as custom in-hub radial flux motors.
In addition to the low-voltage systems we have developed on our existing vehicles, we are pioneering new board designs for power management and conversion: a battery management system (BMS) with active balancing and a maximum power point tracker (MPPT) for optimizing solar array power.
Unlike single-occupant vehicles, aesthetics and usability are important to SR-4’s interior and exterior design. The vehicle contains a multiple-display information system powered by a live telemetry server, cruise control, and an external charging port allowing the battery pack to charge in merely 3 hours.
Vehicle testing and improvements are underway this year and the team is looking forward to racing SR-4 in 2025 and 2026.
